Field Hockey’s Luus Leads Terps In Win Over Michigan

The No. 9 Maryland Terrapins beat their Big Ten rival, the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines, 2-1 in a high-intensity game on Friday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md.

“I’m very proud of our women, that’s a great team and another great win in the Big Ten,” head coach Missy Meharg said after the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday once again started in goal for the Terps. Holliday collected a career-high six saves on Friday, giving up one goal in the first half to Michigan forward Sina Lampe.

“She’s making saves, she’s coming out. Her technique isn’t always perfect but she’s stopping players from getting one on ones, and that’s really positive,” Meharg said.

Senior forward Welma Luus scored both goals for the Terps, her forth and fifth goals of the season. The first goal came with eight minutes to go in the first half off of a penalty corner. Senior defender Sarah Sprink had the assist.

“Scoring, especially when you’re not having the best start… it just gives the team energy and it gives us a little motivation, and saying that, hey, even if we’re not playing our best game we can still score and win the game,” Luus said.

In the second half, Luus sneaked the ball past Michigan’s goalie for her second goal of the game, giving Maryland a 2-1 lead.

“I was just really excited, just really excited to get the goal in and for us to get up. It’s always exciting when its one-on-one, it doesn’t even matter who scores, we’re just as excited,” Luus said.

With four cards issued and three official reviews, the game remained intense up until the very last second.

“It was a lot of energy coming off the benches for the whole game. It was a very emotional, high intensity game on and off the field,” sophomore defender Carrie Hanks said.

With Friday’s win the Terps advanced to 7-3 on the season, and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

“I’m impressed,” Meharg said, “they found a way to win the game. We didn’t have some of the best performances by some of our most consistent players, and I think they would agree. They found a way to win though, and that what matters right now.”
