In spite of result, Women’s Soccer draws positives from showdown with Pepperdine

It was only natural that there was an extra wave of soccer to be played Friday when No. 25 Pepperdine visited Maryland from Malibu, California.

After regulation, the Lady Terrapins and the Waves were scoreless, sending the game into extra time. But Pepperdine senior Rylee Baisden ensured that there would be no further action.

With just under two minutes remaining in the first extra time period, Baisden netted her team-leading fourth goal on the campaign to send the Waves out of College Park victorious.

In its first leg of a two-game East Coast trip, Pepperdine showed no signs of weariness, as the Waves played the role of aggressor all game long. In the first half alone, they attempted nine shots, four of which were on target.

Friday marked a young Maryland squad’s first matchup against a ranked opponent. Despite its lack of a clear starting goalkeeper, Maryland recorded 11 saves in total. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Egyed tallied a career-high seven of those saves in just 55 minutes of play.

“They’re all doing great,” Coach Ray Leone said of his three keepers in Egyed, Stephanie Senn and Katelyn Jensen.

“No keeper actually likes this… I’m just really proud of them for dealing with it,” added Leone.

With the loss, Maryland is now 2-2-1.

“This [loss] fuels you,” said Leone. “We lost to TCU in an overtime game like this, and we turned around the next time and played a lot better. We just have to do it again.”

In spite of the loss, forward Jarena Harmon was upbeat.

“Going back, looking at film, we’re doing positive things,” said Harmon. “We’re there. We’re head to head with teams that have been together for three or four years.”

The Lady Terrapins travel to Boone, North Carolina for a matchup against Appalachian State Sunday. They will face a Mountaineer club that boasts a 4-3 record after a loss to Liberty on Friday.
