The ninth-ranked Maryland Terrapins secured their second victory this week, continuing their success with an intense 3-1 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers.

Capitalizing early in the first half, the Terps dominated possession with fast offensive breakaways and quick defensive saves — leaving Indiana’s defense on overdrive.

Sophomore defender Bodil Keus was instrumental in creating give-and-go opportunities up the field, resulting in many plays in the circle for the Terps.

Maryland pushed aggressively towards the goal, with two penalty corners initiated by junior forward Linnea Gonzales and a shot on goal from freshman midfielder Kyler Greenwalt.

Although Maryland had plenty of chances to score, Indiana’s defense was able to quickly fend off most scoring attempts. Maryland finished the first half with five shots, two corners, and only one shot on goal.

The second half saw much more offensive play for the Hoosiers, who entered the half with just three shots, one corner, and one shot on goal.

Indiana seized every occasion to break-through Maryland’s defensive wall, earning their first penalty corner soon after the buzzer.

Despite counter attacks from Indiana, the Maryland offense maintained their pressure and finally connected in with a hard shot into the cage by Gonzales (assisted by freshman defender Hannah Bond) and then again from senior midfielder Lein Holsboer with fifteen minutes left.

In a desperate attempt to get on the scoreboard, Indiana managed to sink a quick shot off a penalty corner.

The triumph was short lived, as Maryland answered back just 25 seconds later with a second goal from Holsboer.

With a final score of 3-1, Maryland ended the second half ended with a total of twenty-one shots, eleven penalty corners, and nine shots on goal. Indiana concluded with six shots, three corners, and four shots on goal.

This victory starts the Terrapins off at 1-0 in the Big Ten, breaking Indiana’s four-game win streak and dropping the Hoosiers to 0-1. Maryland will continue their season with a home game against Bucknell on Sunday.
