Just 15 seconds into Sunday’s game Maryland point guard Melo Trimble whipped the ball to Jared Nickens who sunk a three. A little over a minute and a half later Jake Layman hit a three-point jumper putting the Terps up 6-0 and setting the tone for the rest of the game against Oklahoma State. The Terps converted 10 three pointers to seal a 73-64 victory over the Cowboys.

The Terps remained consistent as they continued to show their resilient spirit against Oklahoma State. After gaining an early lead the Terps found a scoring drought with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Unable to produce a single point in five minutes of play, the Terps gave up a six-point lead and Oklahoma State pulled ahead by three. Oklahoma State’s Le’Bryan Nash accounted for seven points during the Terps’ scoring drought.

Maryland ended the first half leading 32-27. The Terps’ standout freshmen Trimble, Nickens, and Dion Wiley combined for 16 points in the first half.

Starting the second half strong, Maryland took a 17-point lead. Under one minute to play, Oklahoma State cut the Terps’ lead to six, but were never able to catch the high-powered Terrapin offense. Layman led the team in scoring, generating 21 points and 11 rebounds on the night. This was Layman’s first double-double of the season.

No. 17 Maryland improves to (11-1) on the season and looks to go (12-1) next Saturday against Oakland before facing their first Big Ten matchup. Maryland’s first conference game will be on December 30th against Michigan State.
