Maryland Volleyball Drops Close Match to Indiana

By Ben Tugendstein

The Terrapins volleyball team fought valiantly Friday night in Bloomington, but Indiana proved too resilient and took down the Terps in four sets, 25-20, 24-26, 22-25, 22-25.

The Terps jumped out early, winning seven of the first nine points, as freshman opposite hitter Angel Gaskin punctuated the run with an emphatic block. The rest of the first set was the Adreene Elliott show as she nailed two service aces and closed out the set with three straight kills.

Maryland was playing from behind early in the second set as the Hoosiers took an 8-3 lead. Freshman Liz Twilley kept the Terps close with a string of kills, but Indiana held off a late Terps rally taking the second set, 26-24.

The third set was more of the same as Twilley’s continued strong play kept the Terps in it, and a late kill tied the set at 18. Déjà vu: Indiana went on another quick run, and closed out the set, 25-22.

The Terrapins battled hard during the fourth and final set, taking advantage of Hoosiers’ mistakes to lead by one midway through the set. But Indiana weathered their own poor play and steadily climbed back into the lead, eventually reaching match point at 24-19. Elliot had a strong kill, as part of a 3-0 Maryland run before they finally fell, 25-22.

The Terps will stay in Indiana Saturday night as they will face Purdue at 7:00 eastern.
