Men’s Basketball Sign 4-Star Recruits Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter

The University of Maryland basketball program announced the official signings of guards Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter for the class of 2016.

Cowan, a 5-11 point guard from St. John’s College High School, is largely expected to play a major role next season with the expected departure of guard Melo Trimble for the NBA. The two are former AAU teammates. The new Terp recruit is ranked nationally as the 46th best player in the 2016 class, according to Rivals.com, and was named the 2015 D.C. State Athletic Association Player of the Year. Moreover, Cowan was named to the First Team Washington Post All-Metro as a junior, while also being selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American camp. Cowan averaged 20 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals this past season.

“Maryland immediately felt like home. For many years I pictured myself in a Maryland uniform,” Cowan said after signing for the Terps. “I’m excited to play for Coach Turgeon, I know he can help develop me into an outstanding point guard.”

Along with Cowan, the Terps added four-star recruit Kevin Huerter, a 6-6 shooting guard from New York. Rated as the 40th best player in the class of 2016 and as the best shooting guard in the state of New York by Scout.com, Huerter will be expected to fill the void left by the departure of current senior Jake Layman.

“We are excited to welcome a pair of very talented and skilled players to our basketball program,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “Anthony [Cowan] and Kevin [Huerter] are student-athletes with strong character who possess a tremendous work ethic and will fit in very well with our team on and off the court.”

Since arriving in College Park in 2011, Turgeon has signed five consecutive nationally ranked recruiting classes, including a top-20 recruiting class for 2016.

Maryland is already 1-0 this season, comfortably winning their season opener against Mount St. Mary’s 80-56. On Tuesday, the No. 3 Terps will face their first challenge of the season, as they welcome the Georgetown Hoyas.
