Terps Pull Together, Top Towson

By Gillian Vesely

Despite a sloppy start, the Maryland women’s basketball team used a balance effort to snap their two-game losing streak and beat the Towson University Tigers 81-52 in Sunday afternoon’s matinee game.

Brionna Jones led the Terps in rebounds (8) and scoring (17), but was just 7-13 from the field. On the other side of the ball, Towson forward LaTorri Hines-Allen embodied the Tigers’ offense with 21 points, while Towson’s second-highest scoring was Dominique Johnson with nine.

The Terps fell behind early in the first half due to consistent scoring from Hines-Allen, but Maryland’s Tierney Pfirman provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight in the first half and allowing Maryland to reclaim the lead.

This game was a true team effort from Maryland, however, with every Terp getting playing time. Head coach Brenda Frese commented on the importance of the bench’s depth after the game.

“There’s different games where you could have foul trouble…[so] we need to be able to extend to our bench,” Frese said.

Forward Shatori Walker-Kimbrough came alive to score 11 of her 15 in the second half, and guard Chloe Pavlech used 17 minutes of playing time to score five and dish out a team-high four assists. Kiara Leslie and Kristen Confroy also contributed offensively with eight and 10 points off the bench, respectively. Sole senior Laurin Mincy was congratulated by teammates after hitting a three-pointer (her only basket of the game) and becoming the 29th Terp to cross the 1,000 career point threshold.

“Just really happy and thrilled for Laurin,” Frese said. “Really excited for her to be able to get her thousandth point, and to be able to do it at home in front of all our fans.”

The Terps were able to hold Towson to a shooting percentage of just 33.3 percent on the game, despite turning the ball over 16 times throughout the contest. Maryland hopes to gain another victory when they take on American University at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
