The Maryland Terrapins Softball team went 2-1 over the weekend at the JMU Invitational, beating Rhode Island and Stony Brook and falling to host team James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.

Saturday afternoon the Terps faced off against Rhode Island and crushed the Rams in an 18-3 victory in five innings.

Designated hitter Bridget Hawvermale had a six RBI day, beginning in the first inning with a two run single. In the fourth inning, Hawvermale hit a grand slam and catcher Shannon Bustillos followed up with a two run homer later that inning. Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser earned the win after pitching two scoreless innings.

On Sunday the Terps had a doubleheader, beating Stony Brook in a 2-1 victory then falling to James Madison 10-5 later in the afternoon.

In Game 1, the Terps gained the lead in the first inning off of an RBI double by left fielder Erin Pronobis. Their lead increased in the second inning when center fielder Hannah Dewey took a bases loaded walk, scoring Bustillos from third. Kaitlyn Schmeiser again earned the win, striking out seven, pitching a complete game and giving up just one run.

The Terps did not have the same luck in Game 2. After giving up four runs to JMU in the first inning, the Terps attempted to make a comeback in the fifth inning. Center fielder Lindsey Schmeiser hit a two-run double and Dewey followed with a two-run home run. However they could not stop the Dukes’ offense from collecting ten runs.

The Terps head to George Washington University Friday to face off against the Colonials before their home opener on Saturday against Lafayette at 11:00 a.m. in College Park, Md.
