A double overtime goal by sophomore midfielder Lein Holsboer led the No. 7 Maryland Terrapins past the No. 17 Northwestern Wildcats on Friday afternoon, advancing the Terps to the Big Ten Tournament finals.
On Thursday, the Terps advanced to the semifinals after beating Michigan State 3-2. Senior forward Welma Luus scored twice in Thursday’s game. Senior defender Sarah Sprink, recently named the Big Ten Player of the Year, scored as well.
In Friday’s matchup, the Terps took 29 shots on goal, scoring twice. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday had six saves in goal, tying a career high. Despite taking frequent shots on goal, the Wildcats were the first to score. With ten minutes left in the game, Luus tied the game with her 16th goal of the season and sent the game in to overtime.
The first overtime period was scoreless. Two minutes in to double overtime Holsboer scored, winning the game for the Terps. Sophomore defender Carrie Hanks had the assist. It was the second double overtime win for the Terps, after beating Iowa in double overtime on Saturday. Holsboer also scored the game-winner in that match.
The Terps will play the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Tournament finals on Sunday at noon in Bloomington, Ind.
