On Tuesday afternoon, one of our broadcasters tweeted that Penn State had revoked our broadcast credentials for the game on Saturday. I want to clear up this situation.
WMUC Sports had applied for media credentials to broadcast the Maryland-Penn State football game this weekend. Our application was accepted and we received the credentials, though we were warned that if a national radio decided to call the game, we would no longer have a spot to broadcast from.
On Sunday, we found out Compass Media was doing a national broadcast of the game on Saturday and we would no longer have a box to broadcast from. We tried to see if there would be space to broadcast from the press area, but that was not an option.
While we are disappointed we cannot call the Maryland-Penn State game in Happy Valley in our inaugural Big 10 season, we understand that this type of situation is common in NCAA schools. In fact, even Maryland could be in a similar situation and not allow an opposing school’s student radio station to broadcast a game at Byrd Stadium.
Our broadcaster did not fully understand the situation when he tweeted out the statement and has been informed of the full story. The tweet should not have been sent out in the first place and the situation should have been handled in a very different way. I apologize on behalf of the station for any confusion this has caused and I hope to continue to work with Penn State’s athletic department going forward.
Go Terps!
