No. 5 Maryland field hockey secured a dominant conference win over Indiana, 3-0, Friday afternoon. The victory is Maryland’s 800th in program history, improving their record to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. The Terps are 13-0 all-time against the Hoosiers.
Hope Rose led the way with two goals, while Maryland’s defense kept Indiana’s offense in check, preserving a shutout and controlling the pace throughout the game.
Maryland’s high-press offense immediately put Indiana on the defensive, and after a penalty corner, Rose scored in the sixth minute. Collecting a rebound, she chipped the ball over Indiana goalkeeper Sadie Canelli to give the Terps an early, 1-0 lead.
The Terps continued to pressure Indiana’s defense, earning a penalty opportunity in the 12th minute after a fast break by Maci Bradford. Canelli saved the initial shot, but Maryland’s Josie Hollamon converted on the rebound to put the Terps up 2-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Indiana struggled to break through Maryland’s defense, failing to register a shot until the 21st minute when Jemima Cookson’s effort went wide. The Terps’ defensive unit, anchored in the center of the field and kept the Hoosiers from generating any meaningful chances throughout the game.
In the 35th minute, Rose netted her second goal, firing a reverse shot from the edge of the shooting circle into the right side of the cage, extending Maryland’s lead to 3-0. It was Rose’s second multi-goal game of her career — her last coming against Indiana in 2021.
Indiana earned their first penalty corner shortly after Rose’s second goal, but Maryland’s defense blocked three consecutive shot attempts. Canelli made several key saves for Indiana, including a trio of back-to-back stops in the third quarter, but Maryland’s three-goal advantage was insurmountable.
Late in the game, Indiana pushed for a response earning two penalty corners in the final quarter. Maryland goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made a pair of crucial saves in the 56th minute, denying shots from Yip van Wonderen and Cookson to keep the Hoosiers off the board.
With the win, Maryland remains among the four Big Ten teams ranked in the top 10. The Terps’ next challenge comes Sunday when they host No. 17 Penn State in College Park.
