COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland couldn’t overcome its early defensive miscues or Georgetown’s timely hitting, falling, 11-7, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Tuesday evening.
Maryland (14-19, 3-9 Big Ten) allowed four runs in the third inning and four more in the seventh as its pitching staff issued eight walks and hit three batters. The Hoyas (12-20, 1-2 Big East) racked up 12 hits, stole six bases and capitalized on a pair of wild pitches to pull away late.
Freshman catcher Jacob Hauk earned his first career start giving Alex Calarco a break behind the plate as the designated hitter. Hauk drew two walks and a single reaching base three times.
Hollis Porter led the Terps’ offense with a 3-for-5 day. One of those hits was a three-run home run that tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third. Chris Hacopian and Brayden Martin each added hits and scored once. Calarco and Aden Hill both drove in runs.
Georgetown regained the lead in the fifth and never trailed. The Hoyas scored in five different innings and pushed across at least one run against four out of the five Maryland pitchers.
“Just too many freebies on the pitching side for the most part,” said Maryland head coach Matt Swope.
Right-hander Logan Hastings took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season after surrendering one run in 1.2 innings. Georgetown used seven pitchers. Graduate pitcher Griffin O’Connor earned the win after a clean sixth inning.
Georgetown second baseman Jeremy Sheffield drove in four runs and Jackson Thomas scored three times on a 3-for-5 night. Kavi Caster added two hits and a pair of RBI.
The Terps stranded 11 runners on base and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Georgetown also committed three errors, but limited the damage with strong relief pitching in the later innings.
The Terps head to Newark for a Wednesday road matchup against Delaware.
