Just 16 hours after a sloppy, poor-shooting, turnover-filled letdown against St. Bonaventure, Maryland men’s basketball earned a win by doing the exact opposite.
In their final game of the Emerald Coast Classic, the Terrapins topped New Mexico 80-65 by shooting over 50 percent from the field and three-point rankge. They also limited the Lobos to under 34 percent shooting.
The Terps got out to a hot start behind their three-point shooters. After making just two three-point shots the night before, Maryland started off 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. In the first half, Dion Wiley, Kevin Huerter and Jared Nickens combined to make six three-pointers, an encouraging sign after Huerter struggled immensely against the Bonnies.
A hot shooting start propelled Maryland to a 27-3 lead in under 10 minutes, a lead that it maintained through the entirety of the game.
Although Wiley and Nickens provided spark via the longball, Maryland still relied on its sophomore trio to guide the team to its sixth win of the young season. Anthony Cowan, Justin Jackson and Huerter combined for 45 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists . It was quite the disparity from Friday night’s performance, during which the ‘Big Three’ had more turnovers than made field goals.
However, the Terps still turned the ball over 22 times, the third time this year they have eclipsed 20 in a single game. It is something head coach Mark Turgeon will be sure to address throughout the season.
The Terps will play their third game in four days when they travel to Syracuse to play the Orange on Monday night. Maryland, which struggled with St. Bonaventure’s zone on Friday, will surely be tested by the famed 2-3 Syracuse zone in the Carrier Dome.
