In a one-sided affair, the No. 6 Maryland Terrapins were dominated by the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils during a 2-0 defeat in their first game of the B1G/ACC Cup.
The first five minutes were marked by a barrage of scoring opportunities for Duke, which was able to score on its third shot on goal to take a 1-0 lead early in the game.
The Blue Devils continued their first half onslaught with a goal with 18:10 left in the half on a penalty corner. The goal came on a redirect from a shot from the top of the key, and the Devils were rolling up 2-0.
Throughout the first half, Duke dominated possession of the ball, as the Terps didn’t attempt a shot until there was only 11:28 left in the half.
The Blue Devils’ suffocating defense limited the Terps to a single shot in the first half, a wide-right attempt by Linnea Gonzales. The Terps were outshot 9-1 during the half.
Just like the start of the first half, the second half began with several scoring opportunities for Duke. Maryland goalie Sarah Holliday was under fire early, as she faced four shot attempts and two penalty corners in just under four minutes. But Holliday stood firm in not allowing a third goal. The junior recorded a career-high 12 saves.
Maryland began to turn it around a little bit after a timeout with 13:29 left in the game, as the Terps managed to get a couple of shots from Julie Duncan and Madison Maguire, but it was too little too late.
Maryland was outshot by Duke 20-3 during the game, which characterized how dominant Duke’s offensive attack was during this top 10 matchup.
The loss drops the Terps to 1-1 on the season. Maryland’s next game will be against No. 12 Boston College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in its final game of the B1G/ACC Cup.
