After 64 minutes of limited offense for both squads, Wake Forest midfielder, Giovanna DeMarco, broke the silence, blasting a rocket to the upper right corner. Despite Maryland’s defense being stout for most of the game, an errant pass by the Terps set the Demon Deacons up perfectly, and they capitalized.
Unlike the Terps’ other games, they would have no response to their deficit.
Maryland women’s soccer lost its first game this season at home to No. 24 Wake Forest, 1-0.
The Terps hoped to keep their momentum rolling following their first win of the year, shutting out George Mason.
The first half was quiet for both teams, as Wake Forest only had two shots compared to Maryland’s one – with none being on goal. In the second half, the shots increased substantially for both sides.
Much of Thursday night’s match, offensive opportunities were stifled by the opposing team’s defense. The Terps held the nationally ranked Demon Deacons to 10 shots, their second lowest this season. Despite this, Maryland only put up five shots with just one on goal.
Madeline Smith had another solid night in the net, posting three saves on five shots on goal. For Wake Forest, goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks had a quieter night, with one save on the Terps’ only shot on goal.
It was a foul-laden game, with Wake Forest registering 15 fouls to Maryland’s 13, with each earning a yellow card.
The Terps will look to rebound from tonight this coming Sunday when they take on the St. Joseph’s Hawks here at home for Senior Day.
