Over the last 32 minutes of the game, No.10 Maryland outscored No.20 Purdue 71-59. The problem? The Terps put themselves in a 16-point hole just under eight minutes in, creating a deficit too large to overcome, as the Boilermakers held off the Terps comeback to win, 83-79.
Purdue (22-7, 10-6 B1G) was led by center A.J. Hammonds, who scored 19 points and provided a game-high seven rebounds. Guard Dakota Mathias came off the bench and provided a spark for Purdue, shooting a perfect 5-5 in the first half and finishing with 17 total points.
The Terps comeback attempt was led by center Diamond Stone, who had 18 points and five rebounds. Forward Jake Layman had a solid game as well, scoring 15 points on 7-8 shooting.
Melo Trimble’s shooting woes continued for the Terps (23-6, 11-5 B1G), as their star point guard shot just 4-12 from the field. But Trimble kept finding a way to get to the charity stripe, as he made 9-10 free throws and finished with a team-high 19 points.
After going down 16 early in the first half, the Terps cut the gap to five at halftime. But the Boilermakers were able to stretch their lead back to nine with just under eight minutes left to play, and seemed to be on the verge of putting the game out of reach.
But the Terps switched to a full court press, and went on a 7-0 in just 26 seconds. With 2:12 left, the Terps tied the game at 76; the first time they weren’t trailing since the Purdue scored the first basket of the game.
But the Terps just couldn’t seem to get over the hump. On the next possession, Hammonds would get fouled and make one of two from the line, immediately regaining the lead for Purdue.
Maryland would not make another shot the rest of the game, and the Boilermakers made all their free throw attempts down the stretch, allowing them to pull off the upset.
Maryland has now lost 19 straight games versus ranked opponents when playing away from College Park. Another big road test awaits them a week from today, when they travel to Assembly Hall to face an Indiana team that is currently first in the Big Ten standings.
