Ninth ranked Nebraska Volleyball had little trouble with the inexperienced Terrapins, winning in straight sets, 9-25, 11-25, 12-25.
The Cornhuskers ambushed Maryland to start the match, jumping out to a ten point lead midway through the set. Ashlyn MacGregor and Liz Twilley kept the Terrapins alive with a kill apiece, but a Nebraska 6-0 run closed out the set, 25-9.
The Terrapins showed a little improvement in the second set. Angel Gaskin and Hailey Murray each a kill to brake Nebraska runs – but a 15-7 deficit was too much to overcome. The Cornhuskers sprinted to a 25-11 second set win.
Maryland stayed tight to start the third set, trailing by just one. But a 4-0 run put Nebraska up 9-4. Murray, MacGregor, and Adreene Elliot used a variety of points – a block, a kill, and an ace – to pull closer. But a Husker 8-2 run closed out the final set, 25-12 and the match.
“Nebraska is a really good volleyball team. I thought they played really well and have a lot of experienced kids,” commented head coach Steve Aird.
With the loss, Maryland falls to 12-14 on the season and 2-10 in the Big Ten. They have a long rest before facing No. 3 Penn State 8 p.m. Thursday in College Park.
