Freshman Sebastian Elney scored two goals as No. 11 Maryland defeated the Wisconsin Badgers, 4-1, in Madison on Sunday afternoon.
The Terps had struggled to score recently, managing just two goals across their last four games (two ties, a win, and a loss). But offense was not an issue Sunday, as Elney, Mael Corboz, and Alex Crognale all found the back of the net for the Terrapins.
Maryland struck early, as Elney scored off an assist from Eryk Williamson just barely a minute into the game. Amar Sedjic was also credited with an assist on the play. Four minutes later, Corboz notched a goal off another assist from Williamson, and the Terps were up 2-0.
Wisconsin’s Tom Barlow scored in the eighth minute of the game, just the fourth goal that Maryland keeper Cody Niedermeier has allowed in seven games this season. That put the Badgers on the board, but it would turn out to be the only offense they would muster for the whole game, as the Terps’ defense continued to shine.
Crognale scored later in the first half off an assist from Corboz, and early in the second half, Elney notched his second goal of the game and sixth of the season, this one assisted by Tsubasa Endoh and Suli Dainkeh.
Maryland totaled 12 shots on goal, while Wisconsin had nine. With the win, the Terps improve to 4-2-3 on the year, and 1-0-2 in conference play. They’ll return to Ludwig Field Friday for a matchup against Northwestern at 7:30 p.m.
