On a rainy afternoon in College Park, the Maryland Men’s Soccer Team fell to Northwestern 2-1 in extra time.
The game was scoreless until the 78:48 mark, when Maryland freshman forward Jorge Calix scored on a rebound after Northwestern goalie Zak Allen couldn’t corral a shot.
However, that lead didn’t hold for long, as Northwestern midfielder Camden Buescher tied the game with just less than eight minutes to go in the game.
Finally, with 8:53 passed in extra time Northwestern’s Getenet Tuji beat Maryland goalkeeper Cody Niedermeier to win the game.
Even though the score was close, Maryland dominated the stat sheet. They outshot Northwestern 23-3 in total, including holding Northwestern without a shot for the entire first half. In addition, Maryland collected more corner kicks by a 12-2 margin, yet failed to capitalize.
Due to threatening thunderstorms, the game was moved from 7:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. As a result, the Maryland student section wasn’t nearly as raucous as they are known for, neutralizing Maryland’s home field advantage. The rain also caused members of both teams play a sloppier game than they expected.
After falling to 4-3-3 on the year, and 1-1-2 in Big Ten play, Maryland gets ready to take on Villanova at home on Monday.
