Head coach Missy Meharg of the Maryland field hockey team earned her 500th win in style Sunday as her Terps secured a 6-2 victory over Miami (Ohio).
The Terps distributed the ball well, with goals coming from Sarah Sprink (assisted by Emma Rissinger and Lein Holsboer), Linnea Gonzales (assisted by Rissinger), two from Welma Luus (one assisted by Kasey Tapman), Holsboer (unassisted), and Courtney Deena (assisted by Sprink).
Deena’s goal, which came with less than a minute remaining in the game, was her first on the season, while Gonzales’ first-half goal marked her 10th score of the year. Sarah Holliday got another win in goal for the Terps, improving her record to 8-0.
For the Redhawks, Estel Roig and Bea Dechant were both able to find the back of the net, but their two goals would not be enough to overcome the potent Terps offense. Meharg – who became just the fourth Division I head coach to win 500 games – and her team will take on Penn State at the Nittany Lions’ Field Hockey Complex at 4 p.m. Friday.
