As the rest of the Terps jogged towards the locker room to a loud ovation after their 87-67 win over Marshall on Sunday, Robert Carter Jr. remained on the court for postgame interviews. The Georgia Tech transfer finished the night with a game high 19 points, while adding eight rebounds.
“We were able to control the ball the way we wanted to. We made the right plays and guys made their shots,” Carter Jr. said. “I think we are doing pretty well so far. We practice hard and it makes everything easier.”
Along with Carter Jr.’s 19 points, freshman Diamond Stone matched his career high with 16 points, while adding seven rebounds. Guard Rasheed Sulaimon finished the night with 14 points and four assists. Melo Trimble rounded out the Terps’ double digit scorers with 13 points and seven assists.
“Robert [Carter Jr.] was good. Diamond [Stone] was good when he got in there. He makes it look so easy how he scores around the basket,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “That was our plan. We wanted to play inside-out.”
With the inside presence of Carter Jr. and Stone, the Terps scored 32 points in the paint and managed to comfortably pull away in the second half, largely due to the defensive effort. Marshall connected only one of their 13 three point attempts after intermission, and finished the night with a 35.1 field goal percentage.
“These past practices, we’ve been working on defense so I think [Carter Jr.] and I stepped up to the challenge of guarding perimeter players,” freshman Diamond Stone said. “Marshall had two good perimeter players and [Carter Jr.] and I locked in and thought we did a good job of shutting it down.”
The win improves Maryland’s record to 11-1 and extends their winning streak to five games in a row. The Terps welcome Penn State on Wednesday at the Xfinity Center to tip-off conference play.
