Terps Search for Win at Ohio State After Unexpected Draw with Indiana

By Emily Olsen

In the 103rd minute of the showdown between Maryland and Indiana on Sunday afternoon, forward Shade Pratt sped toward the Indiana goal. The only obstacle in her way was Hoosier goalkeeper Sarah Stone. Pratt pounded a shot directly at Stone and what looked like Maryland’s only opportunity to come home with a win was shut down as quickly as it arose. The 110th minute fell away and the Indiana Hoosiers celebrated the tie, and welcoming the one point for the standings. On the other side of the field Terps’ players looked deflated after a long-fought draw.

Instead of three crucial points to put Maryland atop the Big Ten leader board, the Terps remain in the middle of the pack.

After 110 minutes of play, both Maryland and Indiana came up scoreless. The Terps’ offensive attack slowed and was unable to produce a goal.

“I think we were just missing that little spark. As a team, collectively, we didn’t have that winning mentality,” said Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands.

“Not a good result. Not at all” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “I don’t think we came out motivated and inspired.”

Despite several attempts, and Maryland’s recent offensive success, the Terps only registered two out of 11 shots on goal.

“It was just a matter of having the will to just drive at them and go to goal and take every half opportunity you get,” midfielder Riley Barger said. “I don’t think we took those chances today.”

Indiana was (1-6-1) in conference play going into Sunday’s game.

“I don’t think we underestimated them at all. We had just scouted them and we knew how hungry and desperate they were,” Beanlands said.

In contrast to the lack of offensive results, defensively, Maryland received their fifth shutout on the season.

“We’re getting a little better connected,” Beanlands said of the defense.

As far as going forward, the Terps have a positive outlook on the remaining part of the season.

“We actually talked about this earlier today,” Barger said, “having the willingness to be successful. We want to be successful. We want to get into the NCAA tournament. We want to get into the Big Ten tournament. We want to make an impact. We want to have success in the later half of the season.”

The Terps currently sit in the middle of the standings with six games left in the regular season. Their next opponent will be against Ohio State; a team Morgan once assisted coaching. Maryland plays in Ohio Saturday at 7pm. The Terps say that they are ready to take on the remaining games with strength and a willingness to win.

“We are hungry. We have to find it in ourselves to put teams away,” Beanlands said.
