Four-star wide reciever Trevon Diggs has recently announced that he will be making his verbal commitment this Saturday following Avalon’s final game against Calvert Hall at 1 p.m.
Throughout the entire recruitment process, the front-runners for Diggs’ talents have been Alabama and Maryland, with other schools remaining in the mix. Originally, Trevon was scheduled to announce his decision this past July 4th, however he decided to take more time and think about his commitment a bit longer. Additionally, Diggs had originally scheduled a visit to LSU on November 14 and it is interesting to see if that will change after Saturday. While Randy Edsall was Maryland’s head coach, he made a strict rule that any verbally committed recruit cannot take any visits to other schools once committing. Now that Edsall is gone, that rule may not apply under interim coach Mike Locksley.
While his older brother and former Terps superstar Stefon Diggs is tearing up the NFL right now, Trevon has made it clear that wherever he goes, he does not intend to be in his older brother’s shadow. Trevon wants to separate himself and become even better than his brother, as scary as that may seem. At 6 foot, Diggs utilizes his speed and elusiveness to burn any defender out there and if he is able to get the ball in space he’ll be able to rack up yards after the catch (YAC). Saturday is decision day, so who will take home the coveted athlete?
The case for Alabama:
Diggs has already visited Alabama multiple times and earlier in the year has declared them as number one on his leaderboard. It seemed as if Alabama was a clear front-runner for quite some time as Diggs and his family have been very fond with the program and coaching staff. How can you not? Alabama is always a national powerhouse while playing in arguably the best competition in the SEC. If Diggs truly does not want any comparison to his older brother at all, maybe attending a different school would help. There hasn’t been any news of Alabama dropping from his number one so it should be an easy decision… Right?
The case for Maryland:
Home sweet home. Like his older brother, Maryland fans hope that Trevon leans more towards representing the state and playing for the Terps. The season has been anything but quiet for the Maryland football program as they have fired their previous coach and have assigned Offensive Coordinator as interim Head Coach. Locksley is one of the best recruiters in the area and is a big reason this recent “DMVtoUMD” movement even started. Originally, Diggs was being recruited by Maryland as a Cornerback however Coach Locksley has adjusted the offer to being the position we all want to see him at. Wide Receiver. This must be appealing to Diggs along with the firepower that Maryland can potentially have on offense next season. Bullis (MD) QB Dwayne Haskins, a close friend of Trevon’s, has committed to the Terps and has pushed for Diggs to join him since day 1. Early in their recruiting stages, Haskins and Diggs were considered a “package deal” where the two were set on playing in college with each other. It may or may not still be the case; Terp fans can only hope.
Whatever the decision may be, we wish the best to Trevon and wish him nothing but success wherever he may end up.
