The Maryland Terrapins defeated the Wisconsin Badgers in a dramatic fashion Saturday in Madison, earning their second B1G road win of the season. Melo Trimble (21 points, five assists) drained a three with under four seconds remaining to give Maryland a 63-60 lead, the same score that would remain on the scoreboard after the final buzzer.
Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes (17 points) led all scorers in the first half with 14, keeping the Badgers in the game. Trimble and forward Robert Carter put up eight and seven first-half points, respectively, for the Terps while Damonte Dodd, who started at center, had nine.
Maryland’s Diamond Stone – a Wisconsin native – replaced Dodd with about 16 minutes remaining in the first half, and quickly received boos from the Badgers’ home crowd whenever he touched the ball. The freshman finished with 11 points and four rebounds in his homecoming game.
With about a minute and a half remaining in the first half, Trimble slid a one-handed pass to Dodd who finished with a powerful slam to bring the score to 36-30, Maryland. Two free throws from Hayes with 30 seconds before the half sent the teams to the locker rooms with Maryland up four.
Though their halftime lead was just single digits, the Terps shot 59 percent from the field in the first period. They failed to come out aggressively in the second half, though, allowing a Bronson Koenig three around the 10:00 minute mark to put the Badgers up 47-46. Trimble answered with a three about a minute later to regain the Terps’ lead. Another Trimble three with about seven minutes left broke the score open to 56-48, Terps.
Koenig and Trimble traded threes once more with less than a minute remaining in the game, and while Koenig’s three tied the game at 60, Trimble’s put it away, giving the Terps a meaningful win against just the fourth B1G team they’ve faced this season.
Maryland hopes to get another victory Tuesday, Jan. 12 when they take on Michigan in Ann Arbor.
