Class is back in session tomorrow in College Park, but the Lady Terrapins showed no signs of dreariness Sunday in their road matchup against Penn, as they handled the Quakers by a score of 3-1.
Cassie Phillips scored from 30 yards out to give Maryland a 2-0 lead over their neighbors from the north in just the 11th minute. The midfielder caught goalkeeper Carrie Crook off of her line and did not hesitate to shoot.Phillips’ goal came on the heels of a fifth-minute Darby Moore goal that gave Maryland first blood. Chelsea Jackson earned the assist on the play, but it was the Penn defense’s miscue that allowed the redshirt freshman from Norfolk, Virginia to score.
Coach Nicole Van Dyke had no patience for the Quakers’ first game jitters. Immediately after Phillips’ goal, Van Dyke removed Carrie Crook from the pitch in favor of Kitty Qu at goalkeeper. Penn had four first half corner kicks, a comparatively large number to Maryland’s one, yet none of the early opportunities materialized themselves into goals.
For much of the second half, Maryland’s defense held, but in the 70th minute, the Quakers trimmed the Lady Terps’ lead to 2-1. Just four minutes later though, Jarena Harmon’s header found its way into the net to give Maryland a two-goal advantage once again. The goal was Harmon’s fourth in the last two games following her hat trick against William and Mary Thursday. She was the beneficiary of a Jlon Flippens service on a free kick.
With the victory Sunday, the Lady Terps improved to 2-1-1. They will have a four-day rest before they host Pepperdine at Ludwig Field on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The game marks the beginning of the second half of their non-conference schedule.
