Maryland softball’s first-inning run was enough to hold the lead for most of Saturday’s afternoon matchup against Rutgers.
But the Scarlet Knights tied it in the fifth inning, and the Terps hoped the game didn’t follow the same script as Friday night.
Sammi Woods made sure that didn’t happen again, knocking the winning sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Aubrey Wurst closed it out in the seventh to secure Maryland’s 2-1 win.
Maryland pitcher Caitlin Olensky set the tone early. She completed a 1-2-3 first inning and finished the day allowing just 1 run on three hits in four innings pitched.
The Terps took their early lead in the bottom of the first. Woods worked a full count before lining a double. Anna McGowan followed with a ground ball that moved Woods to third, setting up first baseman Mariah Penta. The junior delivered a base hit to center field to bring Woods home as the Terps moved ahead.
Maryland (11-10, 1-1 Big Ten) continued to pressure Rutgers (10-10, 1-1 Big Ten) throughout the early innings. The Terps loaded the bases in the second inning, but came away empty after Rutgers ended the threat with a strikeout.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning, Rutgers eventually answered. With a deep ball over the fence hit by third baseman Addie Osborne, the game was tied at 1-1.
Maryland responded by turning to relief pitcher Aubrey Wurst. Wurst brought noticeable energy into the circle, using the momentum from her teammates and the crowd to shut down the inning.
The Terps regained control in the sixth inning.
Caye led off the inning with a walk, and second baseman Caroline Fox followed with a bunt that forced a rushed defensive play, allowing the batter to reach first while moving Caye into scoring position.
Moments later, Woods lifted a fly ball to left field that was caught, but enabled Caye to cross the plate to put Maryland ahead.
Rutgers threatened late, putting runners in scoring position as the game entered its final inning. But Maryland’s pitching held firm. With a tying run on base, Wurst closed the game with two strikeouts. Caye secured the final out by catching a fly ball, sealing the Terps’ 11th win of the season.
