In 2024, Ohio State went into College Park, defeating Maryland for the first time in program history.

Now, the Buckeyes have their first-ever win streak over the Terps.

No. 11 Maryland field hockey fell to Ohio State on Friday, 2-1, in overtime, marking a second-straight loss for the Terps.

The result is a welcome change for Ohio State after losing three overtime games against ranked opponents already this year.

Maryland had yet to play in overtime this season — It showed. The Buckeyes dominated the period en route to victory.

Throughout the first three quarters of the game, Maryland looked like it would repeat its performance in the matchup against No. 8 Princeton last weekend. The Terps fell behind in the third quarter and were not able to get anything going against the Ohio State defense.

An offensive burst in the fourth quarter by Annemijn Klijnhout gave Maryland some life but the Terps were unable to keep the momentum.

Overtime was the same story as regulation.

Maryland’s offense struggled to sustain an attack. But the Terps’ defense, which had neutralized Ohio State’s star forward Makenna Webster, could not keep her silent on Friday.

Webster was able to score in the overtime period, winning the game for the Buckeyes.

The game started off slow. Neither defense allowed much pressure on goal. Maryland was first to gain offensive momentum, pushing the ball down the field. But the Terps couldn’t get past the Buckeyes’ defense.

Maryland’s offense wasn’t able to gain offensive momentum after that, with Ohio State’s defense not allowing the Terps to maintain any possession on the attack.

Ohio State’s offense was able to keep constant pressure to start the second quarter, pushing towards the shooting circle. Maryland’s defense held strong and prevented any shots at goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko.

Maryland’s offense facilitated some offense of its own midway through the second quarter. The Terps earned three straight penalty corners, but Ohio State goalkeeper Maddie Stevens was able to make the save on Maryland’s only shot.

With just over a minute left, Klebasko came up big for the Terps. She stopped Buckeyes forward Raleigh Kerst to keep the game scoreless through the first half.

Ohio State earned its fourth penalty corner of the game early in the second half. Klebasko was made a great save on a shot by Katie Fichter, but Raleigh Kerst jumped on the rebound and rocketed a shot past the Terps’ goalie, giving Ohio State the lead.

Later on, Maci Bradford had a one-on-one chance, but Stevens made an incredible sliding save to keep the Terps from evening the score.

Maryland was finally able to break through in the fourth. A Callie Rogers pass into the shooting circle was deflected by the Buckeyes’ defense. After the deflection, the ball ended up on Klijnhout’s stick and she evened the score.

Both teams had chances to take the lead shortly after. Ohio State earned three straight penalty corners, but couldn’t take advantage.  while Maryland couldn’t capitalize on two penalty corners of its own.

It took until midway through overtime for either team to get something going. Lindsey Roberts got the first shot of the extra period, but Klebasko made the save. Ohio State stayed on the attack, earning a penalty corner. But the Maryland defense was able to block the shot from Katie Fichter.

That said, the Buckeyes would eventually end it in overtime, securing the win.

Maryland fell to 0-3 on the year away from College Park. The Terps will look to claim its first road win of the season against a Michigan State program that has never beaten Maryland in its history.
