On Senior Day, the No. 11 Maryland men’s soccer team was looking for another big win as they fought to earn their spot in the Big 10 tournament.
Fifth-year Albi Ndrenika provided the answer.
Lilian Fichele found Ndrenika near the top of the box, who slotted the ball right into the bottom left corner to give the Terps a 1-0 advantage they would never relinquish.
“There isn’t a more deserving player to have this shining moment tonight,” Head Coach Sasho Cirovski said after the match.
The fifth-year Maryland Native scored his third goal of the season and his first game-winner to give the Terps a 1-0 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on senior day.
The game started slowly for both teams, with only one shot in the first 15 minutes and neither team able to create quality opportunities.
The crew showed out in full force, as the section behind the opposing goal was passionate throughout the match.
Later in the first half, the game picked up a bit as both teams traded big scoring chances; however, they went into halftime scoreless.
The game started physical in the second half, as Elijah Bishop of Ohio State saw yellow after a rash challenge in the 52nd minute
Finally, the Terps broke through in the 54th minute with Ndrenika’s goal.
“If you knock on the door, good things will happen,” Ndrenika said after the match. “I think our offence is clicking”
Maryland couldn’t keep itself out of the books either, as in the 63rd minute, Franklin Affanyi tripped up an Ohio State player, earning a yellow card. Later, Rodrigo Neri would also get in the referee’s books in the 70th minute.
Despite facing 17 shots, the Terps held firm and fought out the 1-0 victory, their fourth such win this season.
“I thought our guys did a great job of getting numbers back, fighting for balls, but also having some good weak-side defending,” Sasho said after the match.
The one-goal win also continues a theme for Maryland this season, as all of their wins have come by one goal so far.
