No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse came in without a loss on its record.
Thursday’s game was a close call as No. 7 Johns Hopkins went on a tear and almost closed the gap.
But, the Terps pulled away with a 15-12 win thanks to Lauren LaPointe impressing again with seven goals, a career high and three assists.
She has had an impressive start to her season, scoring five goals in her first game and six in the Oregon game.
The third quarter was when Maryland really began to run away with the sand. Kristen Shanahan just went back-to-back twice with four goals for the Terps, creating an eight-goal lead for the Terps.
LaPointe got another shot on a sneaky shot low and to the side of the goal, assisted by Keeley Block.
At the end of the third quarter, the Terps allowed one goal to slip past from Johns Hopkins McKenzey Craig.
Maryland displayed their team chemistry and rhythm, where they were able to have 7 assists, while Johns Hopkins only earned goals off assists 3 times.
The Blue Jays began the fourth quarter with a solid score from Taylor Hoss, only a minute in.
This created momentum for Johns Hopkins with goals from Samantha DiCarlo and then McKenzey Craig, giving Craig a hat trick.
Soon after, once again, it was the Blue Jays scoring, this time Paige Willard with a sidearm shot.
The Blue Jays made 14 shots on goal in the first half, more than Maryland, but JJ Suriano was able to stop and block 9 of them, averaging a save percentage of 64.2%.
After Kori Edmondson missed a pass, Kristen Shanahan was able to swoop in and scoop up the ground ball for a shot and goal, starting the game with a lead for the Terps.
Willard earned a goal from a free-position shot, evening the playing field early in the first quarter.
Keeley Block earned her own free-position shot with six minutes left in the first quarter and was able to start more of a scoring momentum for the Terps.
LaPointe scored the third goal of the game and went on to assist Edmondson with her first goal of the game with two minutes left in the first quarter.
LaPointe assisted once again when Jordyn Lipkin made a cut just two minutes into the second quarter.
Back-to-back goals cut a bit into the Terps’ lead. The goals were scored by Willard and MK Lescault.
After two more goals by LaPointe, the Terps had a solid lead in the second quarter. At the end of the second quarter, the Blue Jays’ Ava Angello slipped in a behind-the-back goal with seconds left.
