When desperately needing a win after back-to-back losses, No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse has a slow start.
But Lauren LaPointe, the Terps’ lead scorer, gave them a much-needed jolt.
That losing streak was snapped in the last game of the regular season, defeating Ohio State 13-9.
LaPointe earned four goals for the Terps by the end of the game, starting her scoring streak in the second quarter, a pivotal quarter for the Terps.
The Terps were solid all around after their worst performance of the season against Michigan on Thursday.
Maryland turned the game into its own during the second quarter, only allowing a single goal from Ohio State while personally scoring five goals one after the other.
The Terps missed some opportunities in the first half, but their scoring was calculated and clean, while the Buckeyes shot 19, but only scored four.
In the second quarter, Maryland began to turn things around with five goals, two by Lauren LaPointe and three of the goals assisted by Jordyn Lipkin.
Lipkin had two goals herself in the second quarter, earning her five points more than any of her teammates in the first half.
Winning the draw was important to allowing Maryland to have more offensive opportunities after going 1-of-4 in the first quarter; they had a much more even second quarter with 4-for-4.
Keeley Block scored her second goal of the game in the second quarter, and Lexi Dupcak scored her fourteenth goal of the season.
Kristen Shanahan secured a four-point lead and put Maryland at double Ohio State’s score at the end of the first half, on a free position, one of her specialties.
By the end of the second quarter, LaPointe earned herself a hat-trick just three minutes into the second half and continued the momentum the Terps created in the second quarter.
Ohio State started the game strong, winning the first quarter after creating solid scoring opportunities and taking advantage of mistakes made by Maryland.
The Buckeyes pulled out their top scorers, with current point leader for Ohio State, Kate Tyack, scoring the first goal for the Buckeyes and the game and goal leader Camryn Callaghan scoring the second.
Tyack ended up scoring the most goals for the Buckeyes by the end of the game with three total goals.
Despite Suriano having a solid save percentage of 57.1% in the first quarter, Ohio State was able to score three goals past the Maryland defensive unit.
After the first quarter, Maryland’s Block was the only Terp who had scored, and the team had missed out on a free position opportunity.
After not getting the first goal of the game, Maryland scored the first goal of every other quarter.
In the third quarter, the Terps scored two out of the three goals and didn’t allow Ohio State to score until five minutes were left.
Maryland still started to slow down in the fourth quarter, but had established a solid lead in the second quarter that held steady for the rest of the game.
Ohio State started to crawl back in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals to Maryland’s three, but weren’t able to come all the way back.
The Terps will now move on to the Big Ten Tournament postseason and will need to figure out how to play a whole game and take this winning energy and teamwork into big competitions with strong teams.
