No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse attacker Lauren LaPointe is setting personal records by the game.
The junior scored a career-high six goals on Saturday, scoring five plus for the third time this season to lead Maryland’s offense against Oregon.
A 100% free-position success percentage also helped Maryland take down the Ducks, 15-7, in Eugene.
Where that free position success took place was started by Kori Edmonson.
Edmondson scored two times on free positions in the first half and earned a hat trick by the end of the second quarter. Later, Clevenger scored the fifth goal of the first quarter off a free position and earned her second goal of the season. Then, Shanahan earned her second goal of the game near the end of the first half off an assist from LaPointe.
That continued throughout the game to Maryland’s other areas.
In the third quarter, freshman Leah Miller earned her second collegiate goal after scoring her first just last game. After the first two goals by LaPointe, Maryland kept the momentum going for the first quarter.
Kristen Shanahan scored during a power play on an assist from Maisy Clevenger, with Oregon down a player.
Despite Maryland’s dominance, Oregon started well.
The Ducks started both quarters in the first half with a goal. The game started with a successful free-position goal from Gabby Santucci, and in the second quarter, Lyla Hurley scored while Maryland was a player down.
But it didn’t matter because the Terps were better.
Maryland’s offense and defense were working in tandem to create a gap between themselves and the Ducks. It worked.
The Ducks only scored once in the first quarter and twice in the second, barely even getting seven shots off on goal, earning JJ Suriano a 57.1% save percentage. Maryland, on the other hand, shot 14 on goal and held Francesca Viteritti to a 28.6% save percentage.
After one minute, LaPointe, assisted by Jordyn Lipkin, tied things up, taking away the Ducks’ lead. LaPointe scored two times again, earning herself a hat-trick by the end of the first quarter, similar to the last matchup against Oregon.
Santucci was a key scorer for Oregon after a lack of goals in her past two games; she was able to earn a hat trick. Her third goal for the Ducks was also the third time in the game that the team scored the first goal of a quarter. Oregon would then go on to score the first goal in the final quarter of the game with two back-to-back goals from Lexi Jenkins and Hurley.
Kayla Gilmore, who also hadn’t scored in the past two games, scored soon after Santucci, keeping Maryland’s large lead. After putting Caitlin Boden in the fourth quarter, Emma Ing was able to get a shot off for Oregon and score. Boden has two saves and now two goals against on the season.
The Terps had a successful game all around and can now begin to take this cohesion and depth into more Big Ten matchups.
