No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse vs. Saint Joseph’s preview

No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse (3-0) won in comeback fashion on Wednesday with a second-half surge against Georgetown. Kristen Shanahan’s four-goal performance fueled the Terps to a 10-7 win.

Maryland couldn’t muster up a fight through 30 minutes, starting the third quarter down, 6-1. But then, the Terps slowly chipped away at their five-goal deficit.

Jordyn Lipkin scored two goals within the first five minutes of the quarter, and soon after, Shanahan began her tear.

Still down in the fourth quarter, Lauren Lapointe netted two goals to level the score. That was all the motivation Shanahan needed; she subsequently scored three goals, getting the Terps to their third consecutive win.

Maryland showed it has the ability to claw back into games, and the team has quickly settled into a rhythm with its key scorers.

Saint Joseph’s

The Terps face Saint Joseph’s on Friday at Sean Sweeney Field in Philadelphia.

Maryland only recently started clashing with St. Joseph’s; the two teams first played against each other in 2022. The Terps won that meeting, 20-6, and haven’t lost since.

The Hawks’ head coach, Alex Kahoe, was a former goalkeeper at Maryland from 1996 to 2000. She has since been inducted into the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame and was an assistant coach for the Terps.

This season, Saint Joseph’s is currently 1-2, most recently losing to Villanova, 13-9.

Saint Joseph’s lost one of its top scorers, Maddie Yoder, who graduated last year. However, the Hawks kept last season’s top goalscorer, senior attacker Alexa Capozzoli. She ranks second on the team this year.

Capozzoli sits below senior attacker Kate Fuhrman. Both players have tallied five goals so far, and Fuhrman has a team-high six assists compared to Capozzoli’s four.

Graduate student Liana Moli typically starts for the team and boasts a 36.7% save percentage this season. While she only played a half in their most recent game against Villanova, she made two stops and conceded nine goals.

Sophomore Tess Talbot was the other goalie who saw action, making her debut in the first half of the Villanova game. She also had two saves in that half, but whether she will make an appearance against Maryland is uncertain.

Maryland

Maryland has had a steady winning streak early into the season, with a pair of ranked wins and a come-from-behind victory under its belt.

In their last game, the Terps continued to establish this season’s top offensive weapons. Shanahan and Lapointe have totaled 15 goals on the season, including six in Wednesday’s win.

Despite Kori Edmondson being off to a slow start — she has four goals and two assists — Maryland’s offensive versatility has kept it afloat. If Edmondson can find her rhythm from last season, the Terps’ attack will only get better.

While Maryland has put up double-digits in the last two games, its play in net has really been the biggest storyline so far.

JJ Suriano has been performing well, with an impressive 66.7% save percentage. As long as she continues to be steady between the pipes and her defense has her back, the team should be ready for whatever challenges come its way.
