No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse preview at Oregon

No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse continued its winning streak and is now 7-0 on the season.

The Terps’ most recent victory was against James Madison, 13-6.

It was one of their better games with solid stats across the board. The team fired off numerous shots, and some new contributors earned points on the scoreboard.

JJ Suriano, the team’s goalkeeper, had a good game, ending with a save percentage of 66.7%.

Kristen Shanahan stood out with six goals in the game, tying her own career high, while Maisy Clevenger and Leah Miller earned their first goals of the season.

Oregon is going to be one of the team’s first Big Ten games. Maryland will play them in Oregon on Papé Field on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Oregon is not currently ranked but has a 6-2 record so far this season. Maryland will be Oregon’s first-ranked competition.

Oregon’s last game was against Kent State, where they dominated 15-1.  In that game, their defense was key to the low-scoring game for Kent State; the Golden Flashes were only able to get 13 shots off, and Oregon’s goalie Francesca Viteritti was able to save 5 of them.

Viteritti was in for 45 minutes of the whole game. She is a redshirt junior with a save percentage of 42.9%. She has played in all games to date.

Playing for the other 15 minutes and also having minutes in every game so far was Kate Shields, who has a save percentage of 47.7% as a sophomore.

On the offensive end for the Ducks are Anna Simmons, Emma Ing, and Lilly Fortin. These three are the leaders of the scoring board for Oregon.

Senior midfielder Simmons has scored 17 goals and earned 5 assists so far. She was a three-time Big Ten midfielder of the week last season, and this season has 16.5% of the team’s goals.

Ing is a redshirt senior who has scored a career-high 6 goals in a game and has totaled 15 so far this season.

Sophomore attacker Fortin has been extremely consistent across the team’s first couple of games, scoring at least once every game.

For Maryland, its season has been going exceptionally well. The team has consistently addressed shortcomings and is starting to gel.

“I think it’s even more exciting that we haven’t even reached our full potential yet. Like this is Maryland lacrosse 7-0 and we’re getting better every day,” Shanahan said.

The Terps have become more consistent with back-to-back margins of 7 on the team’s past two wins.

On the improvement front, the team has seen several new offensive players step up and score, with 6 players earning their first goals as Terps.

Leading that offense is Lauren LaPointe, with Shanahan close behind her.
