For the last three seasons, No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse had lost to Penn, but Thursday was different led by a former Quaker.
It was Keeley Block, who spent four seasons at Penn before transferring to the Terps.
She scored four goals against her alma mater to lead the Terps to a 15-9 win under the lights at SECU Stadium.
Backed by Kori Edmondson, who assisted Block and scored four in the game, bolstering the team after a tough third quarter.
The history between these two teams shows Maryland winning 11 times to Penn winning four, but three of those four wins were recent.
Recent enough that Block was on the team for each one of those victories, it seems that without Block and many of the team’s other recent graduates, Penn has not been performing as well.
This season, Penn has a current record of 3-4, while Maryland has a solid winning streak.
Maryland had a solid first quarter, earning six goals. Junior attacker Lauren LaPointe, the top scorer for the Terps, earned the first goal of the evening.
Graduate attacker Keeley Block scored soon after LaPointe, creating a momentum that led to her fellow Terps scoring two more times, and Block herself scored a second time that quarter as well.
Block scored the second goal of the second quarter soon after Kori Edmondson scored her first goal of the night.
With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, after Penn’s seventh goal of the game, Block was able to earn another point and tie herself with Edmondson for
That third quarter was a solid quarter for Penn, with three goals in a row while Maryland was left scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game.
Edmondson was the one to break that scoring drought with a goal off a free position with five minutes left in the third quarter. She continued to boost the team with the first goal of the fourth quarter.
Shanahan earned two of the goals in the first quarter, one being a unique shot behind the back when cornered by some defenders after a struggle for a ground ball.
Emma Abazia also had a solid shot on a free position with one second left on the shot clock. Abazia was able to send in a bullet past Penn goalie Orly Sedransk.
Penn didn’t remain completely scoreless in the first quarter, though, scoring twice in the first quarter.
Sophomore midfielder Lela Greene scored on a dodge into free space in front of the goal, and junior attacker Regan O’Brien scored with one minute left.
O’Brien and Greene each made another score in the game. O’Brien scored late in the second quarter off a free position shot, and Greene scored early in the third quarter.
Greene earned a hat trick on the field with her third goal coming in the fourth quarter.
The depth of the Maryland team was seen once again in this game, with eight different scorers on the board.
Offense wasn’t the only thing Maryland had going for them; defense was key to keeping Penn to a low-scoring game. Neve O’Ferall had solid turnovers getting into the scrum, and Kennedy Major was back in this game after resting, earning two ground balls.
