The No.14 Maryland Terrapins swept Elon University in a two game series in North Carolina this week.
The luck of the Irish was in favor of the Terps Tuesday as they defeated Elon. The team came from behind scoring 11 unanswered runs to win 15-5. Brian Shaffer struggled through his start allowing five earned runs in 2.1 innings. Ryan Selmer took over in the third and remained in control for the remainder of the game. The team was down 5-1 heading into the third inning. Back-to-back homeruns from Brandon Lowe and Kevin Martir tied the game up in the seventh. From that moment on, Maryland kept the lead. The Terps added on six runs in the bottom of the seventh following doubles from Jose Cuas and Tim Lewis. An additional four runs came in the ninth and Kyle Mooney finished out the game for Maryland. Brandon Lowe went 4-6 on the day with four hits and three RBIs. Kevin Martir went 3-5 with three hits and three RBIs. Ryan Selmer picked up the win with 4.2 innings allowing only two hits.
Wednesday’s game was close between the two teams with the score remaining tied until the ninth inning. Maryland ultimately came out on top defeating Elon 7-3 thanks to Brandon Lowe. With the score tied 3-3, Lowe smashed a double to center allowing Kengo Kawahara to score the go ahead run. Nick Cieri sealed the win with a bases clearing double later in the ninth inning. Jake Drossner started for Maryland going 3.2 innings with five strikeouts but it was Tayler Stiles who picked up his first win of the season through an inning of relief. Brandon Lowe went 3-4 with an RBI, increasing his season average to .412. Nick Cieri hit his second homerun of the year and went 3-4 with four RBIs. Following this win, Maryland improves to 14-4 on the season. The team returns to College Park this weekend for the inaugural home Big Ten series against Minnesota.
