Maryland wins its first home game of the season defeating James Madison, 8-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland baseball earned an exciting 8-4 victory over James Madison on Friday — the team’s first home win of the season. The Terps’ extended their dominance over the Dukes with their sixth consecutive win over the club.

The Terps wasted no time getting on the board.

After a pair of hits putting two men on base, Hollis Porter drove in Maryland’s first run with a sacrifice fly, putting Maryland up 1-0.

In the fifth inning, Maryland took control with a three-run surge.

Eddie Hacopian started the momentum with his 12th RBI of the season, scoring Elijah Lambros on a fielder’s choice. Following Hacopian, Alex Calarco smashed a two-run double down the left field line giving the Terps a three run lead.

Despite a scattered response from James Madison’s lineup, the Terps continued to pour on runs.

With two outs in the seventh Jacob Orr walked, putting a runner on base for Calarco. Calarco launched a two-run homer to right-center — his eighth of the season — extending Maryland’s lead to 6-2.

“Visualization has been a big thing for me, just visualizing success, just believing that the work I put in is gonna work out,” Calarco said.

The Terps weren’t done yet.

In the eighth inning Hacopian doubled down the left field line, driving in Colin Gibbs and Liam Willson to push the lead to 8-3.

James Madison managed to add a run in the ninth, but Maryland held firm for the 8-4 win.

Freshman Jake Yeager earned his first collegiate win pitching five innings allowing only one run while striking out three.

“It’s just having that mentality as you go out there and you know, you’re better than the other guy,” Yeager said.

The real star of the game was Calarco, whose performance has turned heads nationwide. He now ranks second in the country with eight home runs and 29 RBIs. His timely hits — including the two-run homer — were a major factor in the win.

Maryland will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next challenge against UCLA on Friday in College Park.
