Coming off a disappointing weekend series, Maryland baseball was looking for a strong start to its week against Georgetown.
The Terps had scored double-digit runs in their last four Tuesday games, and the offense produced again as the Terps cruised to a 10-2 win over the Hoyas at Capital One Park on Tuesday.
Maryland racked up 14 hits and went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Things started off slow, with both sides being held scoreless over the first two innings.
Georgetown went with an opener, as Max Whitmer started the game and pitched a clean first inning. Charlie Hendrix came out next for the Hoyas.
The Terps’ bats exploded against Hendrix in the third inning. Bud Coombs got things started with an RBI single. Three more runs promptly followed, headlined by an RBI double off the bat of Paul Jones II. Ty Kaunas also added an RBI single.
The Terps trotted out Jake Yeager and Nic Morlang, both of whom struggled on Sunday against MSU.
After a run of strong outings, Yeager reverted to his early-season form on Sunday, giving up eight runs. On Tuesday, though, Yeager returned to form. He started for the Terps, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings and earned the win.
Morlang, who started on Sunday and could not even finish the first inning, also had a bounce-back appearance. He threw two strong innings, giving up just one run.
Both Yeager and Morlang will be key for the Terps down the stretch. When they are pitching well, the Terps’ bullpen remains rested and in much better shape, especially given their injury problems.
After Morlang, the Terps’ bullpen door became a turnstile. Ryan Bailey, Andrew Koshy and Cristofer Cespedes all threw an inning each. James Gladden finished the game, throwing two innings. Over their five innings, only one run was given up.
In the meantime, the Terps offense continued humming. Jones II knocked a two-run home run for his sixth blast of the season. That knocked Hendrix out of the game for the Hoyas. He finished three and 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits.
Franklin Pichardo, who has recently been seeing more playing time, knocked an RBI single to extend the Terps’ lead even further in the seventh.
The Terps bats were clocking on all cylinders on Tuesday. Seven out of the nine players in the starting lineups recorded hits, and everyone reached base. Kaunas batted 3-for-4 with two RBIS and a double. Nate Hawton-Henley knocked in two sacrifice flies. It was an overall strong effort by Maryland on the hitting side, and a positive sign after a rough weekend.
This is a strong start to a week that includes a pivotal weekend series against Michigan at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
