Maryland baseball draws a season-high 22 walks en route to 23-11 run-rule victory over Towson

Entering Tuesday, Maryland baseball was tied for third in the nation in walks drawn this season.

The Terps’ top-tier patience was on full display against Towson, as they drew 22 walks — nearly double the amount of hits they got.

Behind its strong plate discipline and three home runs, Maryland cruised to a 23-11 win over Towson.

The Terps bats came out hot on Tuesday.

Bud Coombs smoked a grand slam in the first inning, helping the Terps jump out to a solid lead.

In the second, the Terps continued to pile on. Ryan Costello hit a grand slam of his own, his team-high 15th long ball of the season. Costello was super productive for Maryland on Tuesday. He went 2-for-2, along with two walks and seven RBIs.

David Mendez went back-to-back with Costello, smoking a home run of his own.

The carousel kept moving in the third inning, as a Paul Jones II RBI single fueled the Terps’ third consecutive multi-run inning to begin the game.

Through three innings, the Terps had drawn eight walks and two hit-by-pitches, allowing them to put up 12 runs on just six hits. This helped the Terps take control of the game.

However, Nic Morlang, Maryland’s starter, continued to struggle. Morlang started against Towson the last time these two teams faced off, giving up five runs and finishing just two innings.

On Tuesday, Morlang failed to complete two full innings. He ended up throwing just 1 ⅔ innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.

Ryan Bailey came in and had a strong inning before giving up a two-run double, allowing Towson to keep hanging around.

Towson continued to crawl back in. Jake Yeager entered for the Terps and did not have a good outing. He gave up three runs and was not able to finish the inning. James Gladden cleaned up the mess, but not before the Tigers made it a three-run game.

The small-ball Terps, however, were not going anywhere. Mendez, Coombs and Aden Hill all drew RBI walks en route to a four-run sixth inning that put Maryland back in front by a comfortable margin.

The RBI free passes continued in the seventh, as Ty Kaunas got in on the action and Hill drew another.

All the walks caused Towson to burn through a lot of pitchers. Six different pitchers took the mound for the Tigers, none pitching more than two innings.

Landon Edwards and Lance Williams finished out the game for the Terps, each throwing an inning each.

Additionally, Jones II added an RBI double, and Colin Gibbs smacked an RBI single to help give the Terps their highest run total of the season.
