Maryland baseball’s offense scored at least ten runs in each of its previous two games.

On Saturday afternoon, the Terps’ bats stayed hot.

Nine runs combined in the first two innings, headlined by a Ryan Costello grand slam, gave the Terps all the cushion they needed in their 21-4 win over Wagner.

This gave the Terps their first home series win of the season.

“Everybody’s a collective right now, they’re working together,” said Brayden Martin. “I think we just came out with the same idea, just come out together, work hard and be able to pass the bat.”

The Terps offense takes zero days off, and got started very early.

Costello lined an RBI single right by the diving first baseman, and was followed by Paul Jones II, who crushed a no-doubt homerun to left center field, scoring three more.

The Seahawks responded and manufactured two runs in the second off Maryland’s starter Evan Smith.

Smith, in his return from Tommy John surgery, pitched just two innings. He was on a 40-pitch limit, according to head coach Matt Swope. He only allowed one hit, but walked three batters and gave up two runs.

Meanwhile, Wagner’s pitchers were struggling. Starter Gavin Townsend went just one inning, allowing four runs, and then Justin Roitman came in.

Roitman gave up a sac-fly to Ty Kaunas, but the big hit came from Costello. Then came Costello’s grand slam, which extended the Terps’ lead even further.

Costello’s production and power have been a revelation for the Terps this season. He hit his sixth home run today and is now up to 19 RBIs on the season.

Nic Morlang then entered for the Terps and pitched three solid innings, allowing just two runs.

The Terps offense quieted down, as Wagner pitcher Jeff Tiw was dealing, but that was short-lived.

Jordan Crosland smashed a two-run homer to left field, right below the scoreboard. After playing the hero Friday night, Crosland remained hot.

Martin and Kaunas followed that up with back-to-back doubles, adding another run to the Terps’ large lead.

The Terps continued to add on in the later innings. Crosland, Martin, and Rylen Stockton each ripped an RBI single. Colin Gibbs also added multiple RBI walks.

Andrew Koshy and Brayden Ryan cleaned up the late innings for the Terps, combining for no runs over four innings.

Along with the solid pitching performance, the Terps’ defense was excellent Saturday.

Despite an error by second baseman David Mendez, the Terps were very impressive in the field. They turned four double plays, their most in a game since 2023.

“That was kind of designed this season,” Swope said. “They’ve done a great job turning.”
