When every starter for the opposing team has a hit by the fourth inning, things might not be going so smoothly.
Maryland baseball’s bats go quiet while their pitching implodes early in their 10-3 loss to West Virginia.
This was their 70th meeting all time, and extends West Virginia’s win streak over Maryland to six straight.
Nic Morlang started for the Terps and struggled in the first. He gave up two early runs.
On the contrary, the Terps offense got off to a slow start. After the Mountaineers’ starter, David Hagen, left with an injury after the first inning, Carson Estridge came in and shut down the Terps.
Estridge threw three scoreless innings and allowed just two baserunners. He dominated every moment he was on the mound.
He was followed up by Ian Korn, who set the Terps down six up, six down in two innings of work.
Meanwhile, Maryland’s pitching struggled heavily.
An RBI single by Tyrus Hall helped propel West Virginia’s lead even further, before Schoenfeld continued his hot day with an RBI triple.
Another run would score before Morlang’s rough day would come to an end, after allowing six runs in just 1 ⅔ innings.
Lance Edwards did not fare any better for the Terps. He gave up a two-RBI single to Gavin Kelly, which ended Edwards’ day very quickly.
Edwards was followed by Brayden Ryan, who also could not contain the Mountaineers’ offense.
Ryan gave up two runs in 1 ⅔ innings pitched.
Andrew Koshy, James Gladden and Cristofer Cespedes were finally able to settle down West Virginia’s offense.
Koshy and Cespedes each threw one scoreless inning, while Gladden threw two. Gladden added four strikeouts, as well.
The ninth inning provided a bright spot for the Terps. True Freshman Franklin Pichardo Jr. smacked his first career home run.
Brayden Martin and Ty Kaunas each drew an RBI walk as well in the ninth.
The Terps fell in brutal fashion after winning five of their last six games heading into Tuesday.
