Maryland volleyball entertained nothing as it shut down St. Peter’s as soon as the game began. 

In three swift sets lasting about an hour and 15 minutes, Maryland continued their six-match winning streak, scoring 25-13, 25-7, and 25-16. 

From the first serve from setter Sara Toth, the Peacock’s defense was set into a struggle. 

Six aces from the Terps, with four put up by freshman libero Raina Chwialkowski, resulted in long service runs and easy points for the Terps. 

Along with the strong start to any play the Terps made, they finished each rally aggressively.

With five attack errors on the Terps’ side compared to the 23 made by the Peacocks, it was hard to deny the Terps’ offensive prowess.

Seven kills from outside hitter Sydney Bryant from the left side and five from middle blocker Eva Rohrbach running slide plays proved to be deadly for the Peacocks.

Leading them offensively was outside hitter Haley Melby, who had 11 kills with a .391 hitting percentage.

They weren’t the only stars of the Terps offense, though, with all hitting above a .200 hitting percentage.

Defense was also a strong point for the Terrapins today, shutting down the Peacocks’ aggressive attack attempts.

With eight total blocks and 13 block assists, Maryland became an impassable wall to St. Peter’s.

Outside hitter Ava Brown and Rohrbach put up many of these blocks, with three and five block assists, respectively. 

Helping out the Maryland block tally, overpasses from St. Peter’s defense were quickly swatted down by the Terps at the net.

11 digs from Chwialkowski and seven from freshman defensive specialist Elayna Davidson helped the Terps with any defensive pickle they got into. 

Freshman Terps were stars again in this match, helping with kills and blocks and leading in digs.

Maryland head coach Adam Hughes said that having the freshmen join the team in January and letting them work off their nerves during spring play has really helped them adjust. 

“They can’t be young for us. They’ve got to learn to compete, and you know they’re doing a good job so far,” Hughes said.

Brown was one of the freshmen who began in January and said that the team is very high-energy and encouraging.

“I trust the staff with everything and the girls too,” Brown said. “I feel like there’s a lot of belief in this program.”

While the Peacock’s offense struggled to set up plays, Toth snagged 29 assists throughout. 

Hughes said that in preparation for their ECU tournament beginning on Thursday, the team will work on improving their serve-and-pass. 

He also said the goal of the Terps is to play quickly, something Toth allows them to do in any scenario. 

“We got to pass well, and we got to move the ball around really well. And Toth has been really good at that so far,” Hughes said.
