Maryland baseball struggled to pull away from Georgetown early in Tuesday’s game and needed something to change.
In the fifth inning, the Terps exploded.
Nine runs powered from big hits via Ty Kaunas and Ryan Costello helped Maryland cruise to a 16-3 victory over the Hoyas.
“That big inning in the 5th is just huge and stacking quality at bats all day,” Kaunas said. “Getting that big inning was huge.”
Rowan transfer, Landon Edwards made his first start for the Terps. He began with a 1-2-3 inning to begin the game.
Later on in the third, Edwards sent the Hoyas down 1-2-3 to finish his day. Edwards pitched three innings, punched out three and allowed two earned runs on three hits.
While Edwards mowed down Georgetown’s top of the batting order, Brayden Martin continued his hot start in the first inning. He crushed a triple to right field and was immediately driven in by a Kaunas’ RBI double.
Georgetown had an answer for the Terps, posting two runs in the second. However, the bats quieted down for both sides over the next innings.
Georgetown’s Charlie Hendrix allowed two runs, one earned, over 3 1/3 innings.
Brayden Ryan came in relief of Edwards and showed major potential. He recorded 10 straight outs to start his night and pitched four nearly perfect innings.
Meanwhile, the Terps’ bats regained their rhythm.
In the fourth, Rylen Stockten and Paul Jones II recorded back-to-back hits. Jackson Sirois drove in Stockten on a fielder’s choice to tie the game.
In the fifth, the Terps broke it open. Kaunas knocked a two-RBI double to right field and was quickly followed by Ryan Costello destroying a two-run home run to right field.
With the bases loaded, David Mendez appeared to have lined out to end the inning, but left fielder Travis Ilitch dropped it, resulting in three runs to score.
The sixth inning remained quiet for both sides, but Georgetown showed signs of life in the seventh. Seymore ripped a single to right field, but a beautiful relay from the Terps started by Martin got the runner out at home.
Antonio Morales crushed a home run to dead center to open the seventh field for the Terps. Back-to-back hit by pitches, followed by the Hoyas fourth error of the night, brought home the Terps’ thirteenth run of the night.
Errors were a huge problem for the Hoyas, as they had five of them, resulting in six unearned runs.
The Terps added on, with Jordan Crosland’s RBI double.
Maryland also scored 2 more runs in the eighth after Jones II scored on a wild pitch, and Martin lined an RBI single.
James Gladden and Jayson Torres finished off the game for the Terps, with Gladden allowing no runs and Torres allowing one.
The Terps now look ahead to their weekend series at Louisiana.
“We talked about just stacking our wins as much as we can,” Kanaus said. “Winning the week is our biggest thing.”
