Almost a year removed from Maryland women’s soccer’s last meeting against No. 8 Penn State, the Terps entered their first Big Ten matchup of the season with much to look forward to.
Those feelings quickly changed in the eighth minute. Once the Nittany Lions took a one-goal lead, they followed up with another score 35 seconds later, preventing the Terps from ever posing a threat.
On a night that saw conference play begin for both sides, Penn State wasn’t going to be denied its second consecutive win. Maryland couldn’t keep pace with the highly-ranked Nittany Lions, falling 4–0 Thursday night at Jeffrey Field.
Head coach Michael Marchiano, in his first full season leading the Terps, continues to emphasize consistency from his group as the Big Ten schedule intensifies.
Within two minutes, Penn State forward Julia Raich nearly found the net, but the on-field decision of no goal was upheld after review.
Maryland goalkeeper Faith Luckey was tested from the jump, facing a string of fast-paced attacks from the Nittany Lions.
Defensively, the Terps were pinned back early, staying compact while Penn State dictated tempo.
The Nittany Lions broke through in the ninth minute when Amelia White buried her second goal of the season, giving Penn State the 1–0 lead.
The Nittany Lions weren’t done there, as forward Audrey Kulpa received a pass from Hannah Jordan and rocketed a shot past Luckey to double their lead just 35 seconds later.
Soon after, White nearly struck again, firing a shot that rattled off the post and resulted in another corner.
Kulpa attempted a right-footed shot toward the far post with no success, while Maryland’s offense tried to work across the dangerous Nittany Lions’ defense.
Still, the Terps rarely sustained attacking pressure. Penn State closed the half with 16 shots, compared to just one Maryland chance — a long strike from Eva Mowery that sailed just high over the bar, a moment that briefly shifted momentum late in the half.
Immediately after the break, Kaitlyn MacBean found the back of the net with a left-footed strike into the top corner, set up by Kulpa’s pace in transition. Minutes later, MacBean doubled her tally, this time slotting home with her right foot after a sharp combination play from Riley Gleason and Kulpa, giving the Nittany Lions a four-goal lead.
Penn State’s surge put Maryland into desperation. The Terps had multiple chances, including a shot that ricocheted off the far crossbar and another that narrowly missed the net.
But Penn State quickly regrouped, regaining control and pulling away down the stretch. The Nittany Lions tacked on three unanswered goals to seal a commanding 4–0 victory in their Big Ten opener.
