In a familiar-looking match, Maryland women’s soccer struggled to gain any offensive consistency on Thursday.
Maryland failed to find the back of the net on Thursday, as the Terps fell to James Madison, 1-0.
The Dukes started off the first half by keeping the Terps’ defense on their toes, as goalie Faith Luckey was kept guessing.
Following a Maryland throw-in, both teams maintained balance on the field, though the Terps continued to face pressure from the Dukes’ offense.
By the 37th minute, the pressure intensified on Luckey. Midfielder Ellie Farrell took a shot at the bottom right of the net, which Luckey saved.
With tight timing at the end of the first half, James Madison executed a throw-in while the score remained scoreless.
Forward Jeanette Fieldsend fired a shot, but the Terps had a key block it to keep the match scoreless.
After a sudden interception from the Dukes, they struck first. Forward Ginny Lackey found the back of the net and was assisted by defender Jordan Yang and midfielder Ellie Farrell.
At a cross, James Madison’s counterattack tested Maryland’s defense, as forward Audrey Orrock reclaimed the ball and was saved by Luckey.
Luckey had three saves in the first half. Maryland only mustered one shot on net in the first half and couldn’t get another for the rest of the match.
To start the second half, forward Kelsey Smith came off strong for the Terps. Through systemic plays across the field, she earned a free kick, but was unable to find the back of the net.
James Madison and Maryland traded numerous attacks downfield, but the Terps still trailed by one and struggled to get a shot on goal.
With 19 minutes remaining, Lizzie Gillen was assessed a yellow card.
Maryland had a chance with under 15 minutes remaining. Midfielder Ava Morales took a shot, but missed the net and failed to tie the game.
With three minutes remaining, Maryland received a throw-in, but couldn’t get a solid chance in a final effort.
The Dukes sealed the match late and earned their seventh victory all-time against Maryland.
Maryland will take the field next Thursday at 6 p.m. as they will face Penn State (3-1-1) on the road.
