No. 12 Maryland field hockey slips past No. 10 Iowa, 2-1

Coming into Friday’s contest, No. 12 Maryland field hockey and No. 10 Iowa had been riding great goalkeeping throughout the season.

Alyssa Klebasko had been elite all year for Maryland. The junior entered averaging just 1.01 goals allowed per game, making 34 saves on the year. Mia Magnotta had been just as good for Iowa, allowing just over 2 goals per game and saving 46 shots, including 11 against No. 1 Northwestern.

The matchup between two of the best in the Big Ten did not disappoint.

Klebasko made eight saves, including multiple diving stops. Magnotta tied her season high with 11 saves of her own, making some incredible saves throughout. In the end, it was Klebasko’s Maryland who won the battle, defeating Iowa 2-1.

The win for the Terps makes it six in a row vs the Hawkeyes. It is the first time this season that Maryland has come from behind to win a game this year.

The game started off with Iowa holding most of the possession. The Hawkeyes pushed the ball towards the Maryland goal, but couldn’t create any offense.

But Iowa was able to get the first chance with just over a minute to go in the quarter. Fréderique van Cleef’s shot was saved by Klebasko and then blocked Van Cleef’s rebound shot.

The Hawkeyes tested Klebasko again, but Dionne Van Aaslum couldn’t beat the Terps’ goalkeeper.

After not creating any offense in the first quarter, the Terps didn’t take long to change that early in the second.

Magnotta made her first impact on the game for the Hawkeyes, making a diving save on a shot from Jordyn Holloman.

Maryland kept the offensive momentum for most of the second quarter. The Terps’ midfield did not allow Iowa to get past them, allowing the attack to keep pressure.

In the final moments of the second quarter, Jordyn Holloman found space to fire an open shot. Magnotta made another incredible save to keep Holloman from breaking the deadlock for the second time in the half.

After being quiet in the second quarter, the Iowa offense got going immediately in the third. The Hawkeyes put pressure on the Terps’ defense, earning two penalty corners within a minute into the quarter.

Led by Klebasko, the Terps survived Iowa’s early offensive onslaught. Midway through the quarter, Maryland created some pressure of its own.

Four different Terps got shots on goal in the barrage, but they couldn’t beat Magnotta.

Maryland couldn’t capitalize and Iowa immediately won the ball, kickstarting the Hawkeyes’ counterattack.

With 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, Iowa earned its ninth corner of the game. Van Aaslum’s shot was saved by Klebasko. But the rebound fell to Lieve Van Kessel, who finally beat Klebasko, breaking the ice for the Hawkeyes’ advantage.

It didn’t take long for Maryland to bounce right back. Maci Bradford moved the ball to Jordyn Holloman right in front of the Iowa goal. Holloman took advantage, tying the game at one with 1:06 to go in the third quarter.

Early into the fourth quarter, the offensive attack for the Terps continued, earning a penalty corner with 12:29 in the fourth quarter.

The insert from Bradford found Josie Holloman, whose shot beat Magnotta, giving the Terps the lead.

It was the Maryland defense that took over from there.

The Terps held strong, only allowing the Hawkeyes to get one shot on goal. Klebasko easily made the save, helping Maryland on for the win.

Maryland will return home to face off against Indiana next Friday.
