No. 25 Maryland gymnastics spent two up-and-down weeks on the road for its first away meets of the year.
Even after shattering the previous program record, held since 2000 on the floor, Maryland recorded a 197.250 – 196.675 loss to No. 17 Penn State on Jan. 24.
However, the Terps bounced back to defeat Illinois, 196.275 – 195.725, on Feb. 1.
Maryland had its first away meet at Penn State and started on Bars. Aine Reade’s season high score of 9.850 and sticks from Sarah Saville and Chelsey Dennis helped Maryland to a season high of 49.075.
Taylor Rech scored a 9.850 and Katerina Medez-Abolnik scored a 9.800 on the vault. Sticks from Dennis and Megan Bingham led the Terps to a score of 48.975.
As previously mentioned, Terps broke a previous program record on the floor. Reade and Madeline Komoroski both scored 9.975, career highs and 4th best scores in program history. Combined with Emily Defrees and Josephine Kolger scoring twin 9.900s and a 9.835 from Rech, the Terps scored a massive 49.575.
Maryland ended the meet on the Balance Beam. Josephine Kolger scored a 9.875, and Bingham, Dennis, and Komoroski all scored 9.800. Combined with Reade’s score of 9.775, the Terps scored a season high of 49.050.
After the faceoff at State College, Komoroski ranked 3rd on Floor in the Big Ten and Medez-Abolnik ranked fifth on Vault.
Maryland next travelled to Illinois for its second road trip in as many weeks.
Reade scored a career high of 9.900 on the bars. Between her and a pair of 9.825’s from Komoroski and Saville helped boost the Terps to a score of 49.075.
Buckmon took home the highest team score of 9.875 in the vault, with Kolger scoring a 9.850 and Medez-Abolnik scoring a 9.824.
Reade was once again the star of the show on the floor, scoring a 9.900. A pair of 9.850s from Kolger and Rech helped the Terps to a score of 49.150, their highest scoring event of the meet.
Defrees scored a career high 9.900, giving the Terps multiple scores over 9.900 for the second time in two weeks on the balance beam.
Despite recording a loss for their first away meet of the season, Maryland achieved a new program record and won against Illinois, setting itself up nicely for its next meet.
