Purdue finds revenge over Maryland in its return to College Park

The new year usually brings about the hope of new and better things, instead this new year, Maryland was hoping for a repeat of history. But instead of an encore, a new year brought about different results.

The Purdue Boilermakers (13-1, 2-1) defeated the Maryland Terrapins (9-5, 2-1), 67-53, ending the Terps’ home winning streak at 19. The win is the Boilermakers’ first win in College Park since 2017.

It was a big difference from the teams’ last matchup. Last season, Maryland defeated the No.3 Boilermakers, 68-54. Jahmir Young had a big day scoring a team high 20 points and the Maryland defense held Purdue center Zach Edey to 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Terrapin defense didn’t have the same success as it did a season ago. The 7’4” center scored 12 in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Boilermakers scored 32 points in the half making four of their nine attempts from three.

It was the opposite for the Terps offense. The Terrapins started the game with turnovers on their first two possessions and then struggled to make anything from the field. Maryland experienced multiple scoreless streaks, one even lasted more than four minutes.

The Terps finished the half shooting 25% from the floor and making only one of their eight three-point attempts. Maryland struggled from the free throw line making only half of its attempts. Maryland trailed by 13 at half.

“I think we just got off to a little bit of a slow start,” said head coach Kevin Willard. “We have a lot of guys seeing, seeing Zach for the first time and seeing that size. I also think they’re a much better defensive team than they were last year.”

The Terps couldn’t overcome the deficit. Purdue rattled off an early 8-0 run to go ahead by 20 by the 16:34 mark. Fifth-year guard Lance Jones scored all 11 of his points in the second half, scoring nine of his points from behind the arch.

“Lance is a really good shooter,” said Edey. “He kept taking them and making them. He was really good at attacking about, looking for his shot and the ball kind of just found him.”

Purdue finished the game shooting over 45% from the floor and making nine of its 20 three-pointers. Three Boilermakers ended the game in double figures and as a team Purdue out-rebounded Maryland, 39-34.

Young was the only Terrapin in double figures. Purdue held Julian Reese without a point allowing him to attempt just four shots throughout the game.

“I think we got to do a better job at trying to help him get some easy buckets at times to kind of loosen him up,” said Willard. “They did a really good job. They knew we’re going to try to go into him. They loaded up the paint and made it really hard for him to get deep post touches.”

Every Terp not named Jahmir Young went a combined 9-40 from the field, accounting for 27 of Maryland’s 53 points.

The Terps will try to build from the loss as they go on the road for their next matchup against Minnesota on Sunday.
