Maryland Tops No. 12 Wake Forest 9-8 in Game 1 Thriller
Maryland baseball edged Wake Forest, 9-8, in the first game of their weekend series, Friday night. The Terps scored three runs in the ninth inning to secure a dramatic late-inning victory.
The Terps lineup struck early posting four runs in the top of the first.
Brayden Martin led off with a single and after a few key hits and walks, Jacob Orr and Aden Hill drove in runs to give Maryland the lead. Hill’s double down the right field line scored Orr and Elijah Lambros added an unearned run pushing the lead to four.
Wake Forest responded in the third inning scoring six runs to take a 6-5 lead. The Demon Deacons tied the game with a three-run homer by Kade Lewis and added three more runs to build their lead.
Maryland quickly countered with a solo home run from Hollis Porter in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams traded runs but Wake Forest regained the lead in the seventh, 9-6, after a three-run homer by Ethan Conrad.
In the ninth inning, Maryland mounted a comeback.
Martin walked and Eddie Hacopian singled to put runners on first and second. Alex Calarco’s hit brought in Martin and Porter followed by adding another RBI single to tie the game. Orr’s timely hit pushed Maryland ahead 9-8, completing the thrilling comeback.
Wake Forest put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Maryland’s Andrew Johnson closed it out with two strikeouts, securing the win for the Terps.
No. 12 Wake Forest Defeats Maryland 9-1 in Game 2
Wake Forest responded to Saturday’s loss with a dominant 9-1 win over Maryland in the second game of their weekend series. The Demon Deacons’ explosive offense and strong pitching performance helped them bounce back after a tough Game 1 loss.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Wake Forest took the lead. Michael Houston walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Kade Lewis — taking 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, Wake Forest exploded for five runs.
Ethan Conrad hit a three-run homer, and Jack Winnay followed with a solo shot to give the Deacons a 5-1 lead. Wake Forest added another run later in the inning, making it 6-1.
Wake Forest kept the pressure on in the eighth inning, adding three more runs. Conrad and Houston reached base, setting up Winnay’s three-run homer to left field — extending the lead to 9-1.
Maryland struggled to generate offense, managing just one run. The Terps struck out 13 times and left several runners stranded. Wake Forest’s pitchers, Blake Morningstar and Nate Brittain, combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.
