Maryland baseball was in desperate need of a win heading into its Tuesday afternoon game against UMBC.

The Terps were swept over the weekend by Ohio State and fell to the bottom of the Big Ten standings.

On Tuesday, however, the Terps notched a wire-to-wire win, dominating UMBC en route to an 11-0 victory.

“I thought we did a good job punching and then coming back with another big inning,” said head coach Matt Swope. “Really happy with the response after a tough weekend.”

After getting shut out on Sunday for the first time in 2026, the Terps recorded their first shutout of the season.

Starting pitcher Nic Morlang shone for the Terps. He threw six innings, allowing no runs, while striking out three batters. With four more games over the next five days, Morlang’s 96-pitch outing was crucial to saving the bullpen.

Tuesday was Morlang’s best start of the season, and one of the best starts by a Maryland pitcher in 2026. Morlang has been very solid recently on Tuesdays, and with the struggles of the Sunday starters, he could earn the spot.

A key stat for Morlang today was that he gave up just two walks. “Freebies,” as Swope calls them, have been a major problem for the Terps this year, and, specifically, Morlang has struggled to keep runners off the basepaths. However, he was able to limit them today, which guided him to his impressive start.

“He started to get in a groove and was just relaxed,” said Swope. “I’m really happy for him.”

After a slow offensive game on Sunday, the Terps’ bats were rolling early on Tuesday.

David Mendez knocked an RBI single before Jordan Crosland delivered the big blow, with a towering three-run homer to left field. Crosland was outstanding for the Terps today, going 2-4 with a walk and three RBIs.

The next inning followed with similar theatrics. Rylen Stockton smoked a two-run homer to extend the Terps’ lead even further.

It was a bullpen day for UMBC. The Retrievers used three pitchers in the first three innings and used seven pitchers overall.

Maryland’s bats cooled off a bit as UMBC’s Bennett Speicher shut them down. He threw 2 2/3 innings in relief and allowed no runs to score. Once he came out, the Terps offense came back to life.

Colin Gibbs smacked an RBI single to give Maryland an eight-run lead. Gibbs has played sparingly this season, but was given an opportunity today and delivered with two RBIs.

The Terps’ power was on display, specifically in the seventh. Ryan Costello and Ty Kaunas hit back-to-back RBI doubles off the wall during Maryland’s third multi-run inning of the afternoon.

Additionally, Brayden Martin made history today. He drew three walks on Tuesday, moving him to third all-time in Maryland baseball history with 119 walks.

Ryan Bailey finished off the game for the Terps, throwing a scoreless seventh inning where he struck out two Retriever batters.
